The Petersen mark and recapture method of estimating the salmon run involves capturing, tagging and releasing the fish before they begin their ocean voyage. When the salmon return to their spawning grounds, they are recaptured and their numbers estimated. From a purely mathematical point of view, the calculations are accurate, however human error and difficulties in catching the salmon can make for gross miscalculations. The background is a school of chinook salmon near the Stamp River fish ladder.
