Canadian Geographic recently named the gray jay, or Canada jay the national bird of Canada in honour of the countries 150th anniversary. This hardy little bird is found year-round in every province and territory, though its preferred habitat is Canada’s boreal and mountain forests. The Canada jay is one of the world’s smartest birds, and it is very friendly and curious towards humans. The Cree peoples called the jays Wisakedjak (whiskey jack) — the animal form of a shape-shifting being, who was alternately trickster, teacher, and messenger of the forest, as well as being an aide to hunters. The Canada jay is not an endangered species, but the birds are important indicators of a forest’s health.
