Caño Island has been a biological reserve on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast since 1978. The island originated from a shift in the tectonic plates during the Tertiary Period, between 40 and 50 million years ago. Diving in this area is like going back in time, long before human and industrial interference. Restricted public access to the island has been key to its preservation and natural aesthetic appeal. There are many protected species in the area including the vulnerable olive ridley sea turtle. The turtle’s feed on jellyfish and crustaceans and have many predators including raccoons, pigs, snakes, birds, sharks and of course humans. North of Caño Island is Ostional Beach where hundreds of thousands of olive ridley turtles go to nest in massive migrations called arribadas (the arrival). Perhaps, this turtle hatched on Ostional Beach!
