Every day in Tortuguero National Park visitors are greeted with a sunrise and sunset vocalization of the adult male howler monkeys. This particular male is quietly watching the troop members feed and relax in the jungle canopy on the Anhinga Lodge grounds. Tortuguero’s biological diversity is due to the existence of eleven different habitats including rainforests, mangrove forests, swamps, beaches and lagoons. Threats to this isolated area are illegal clear-cuts for banana plantations, and poachers who hunt the endangered marine turtles during the nesting season.
